How DotGitIgnore Generates Clean .gitignore Files

DotGitIgnore is a free .gitignore generator for software developers. It allows engineering teams to combine technology-specific templates across programming languages, web frameworks, IDEs, build systems, and operating systems into a single, cohesive, conflict-free configuration file.

What is a .gitignore file?

A .gitignore file tells Git which files and directories should not be tracked in version control. It prevents build outputs (dist/, target/), package caches (node_modules/, .venv/), local secrets (.env), and OS metadata (.DS_Store) from polluting commit logs.

Deterministic Deduplication

Unlike simple text concatenation, DotGitIgnore parses each template line-by-line. Exact duplicate rules are pruned automatically, rules are organized by stack priority (OS → IDE → Language → Framework → Tooling), and intentional negation rules (!) are preserved in their proper context.

Zero Tracking & Client-Side Execution

All template filtering, parsing, and merging execute 100% locally in your browser. No project source code, file paths, repository names, or environment configurations are ever transmitted to any remote server or third-party service.

Supported Development Ecosystems

DotGitIgnore catalogs over 320 verified configurations seeded directly from GitHub's authoritative github/gitignore repository and supplementary curated modern tooling:

How to Use Your Generated .gitignore

  1. Save to Repository Root: Download the file as .gitignore and place it in your root directory (e.g. ~/my-project/.gitignore).
  2. Stage and Commit: Add the ignore file to version control: git add .gitignore && git commit -m "Add .gitignore".
  3. Verify Rules: Test whether a specific file is ignored using Git's verification command: git check-ignore -v path/to/file.
  4. Fix Already-Tracked Files: If files were committed before adding your .gitignore, untrack them without deleting local data: git rm --cached <file>.
